Stress can have a deleterious effect on our patients, leading to exacerbations of chronic disease; increasing the risk of complications of some diagnoses, as well as increasing the risk of additional diagnoses. It can interfere with them reaching their maximum rehab potential in a timely manner and needs to be addressed. In this evidenced based seminar, we teach how stress affects our patients. We will examine what signs to look for, to dtermine if the patient is experiencing stress and look at how different diagnoses may be affected by stress. We will learn what intervention techniques we may offer to help to decrease the effects of stress so that the patient may reach their mac. potential in a timely manner.
Objectives:
Participants will be...
knowledgeable of what stress is and the normal stess response.
knowledgeable of the effect stress has on the different systems of the body.
knowledgeable of the difference between acute and chronic stress
familier with early and recent stress studies
knowledgeable of diagnoses that may be linked to stress or worsened by stress.
knowledgeable of the physiological responses to stress
knowledgeable of stress effects of patients with diabetes, obesity, asthma, depression, cardiac disease, fibromyalgia, etc
knowledgeable of intervention techniques for stress management for patients
Schedule:
8:00-8:30 introduction to seminar, review of objectives, pre test, group interaction on stress
8:30-12:00 and 1-5 pm seminar instruction including the history of stress as we know it; definitions of stress; easily recognized stressors, common complaints of patients who
& are affected by stress; physiological responses to stress: Holmes-Rahe Stress scale administration; how stress affects patients with diabetes, obesity,
day 2 asthma, depression, cardiac disease, fibromyalgia and more;
8-11:30 Stress management techniques including controlled breathing/relaxation, breathing to counteract the sympathetic nervous system response to stress.,
practice techniques; relaxation techniques including jacobson's, visual imagery, practice techniques; the history of manual therapeutic massage,
physiological effects of massage, diagnoses that can benefit from massage, precautions and contraindications, demonstration, practice;geridance,
therapeutic benefits of dance, dance in chair/with assistive device, independ.Demonstration , practice techniques, tai chi, benefits of tai chi exercise,
goals of tai chi, demonstration video, video class led by tai chi master; cognitive therapy, the benefits of exercise to elp decrease stress and its
physiological response; other modalities that maybe used to decrease physiological manifestations of stress; medicaitons used to manage stress
with side effects; other stress management techniques suc as social support, laughter, spiritual support, sleep and more.
11:30-12:00 pm case studies, group discussions, post test and evaluation instructions
