Falls are a life threatening problem for the elderly. It is a problem which requires a multidisciplinary approach. This seminar for health professionals, takes an indepth view of risk factors. Extrinsic risk factors as well as intrinsic factors will be covered including various disease processes such as decreased vision, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, orthostatic hypotension, nutrition, incontinence, drugs, drop attacks, and other balance and mobility impairments. Each participant will have a fall risk assessment form that pulls together todays information to be able to use tomorrow in the clinic which we will review. This is a live interactive webinar.
Objectives:
By class discussion and/or post test, participants will show
1. Knowledge of the impact falls have on the elderly population
2. Ability to identify extrinsic and intrinsic fall risk factors.
3. Knowledge of the effect that various disease processes have on the risk of falls.
4. Participants will have a fall risk assessment form they can put to use tomorrow at work.
Schedule:
8:00-8:35 Introduction and pretest; facts and stats about Falls in the Elderly
8:35-8:45 concerns about falls in the elderly
8:45-9:30 Overview of extrinsic and intrinsic risk factors including video walk through of home to determine risk factors
9:30-9:35 mini break
9:35-10:05 continued overview of extrinsic and intrinsic risk factors
10:05-10:15 break
10:15-11:15 Begin the detailed look at intrinsic risk factors including vision, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, orthostatic hypotension, incontinence, drugs, drop attacks, balance and mobility impairments
11:15-12:15 lunch
12:15-2:00 continued detailed look into risk factors
2:00-2:10 break
2:10-3:25 complete risk factor overview
3:25-3:30 stretch break
3:30-4:00 introduce fall risk form, review, case study, post test and evaluation instructions.
