Assessment Tools to Predict, Treatment Techniques to Prevent Falls in the Elderly
Falls are a leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in the elderly. As health-care practitioners, it is our professional responsibility to try to identify those elderly who are at risk for a fall and do what we can to intervene to prevent future falls from occurring. This seminar begins with a background of how falls and immobility impact the elderly and then several fall risk screens are reviewed. There will be an opportunity to practice some of these screens. Then, we will begin discussion of treatment techniques which may be used with the elderly to help them decrease their risk for a fall including Tai Chi, geri-dance, relaxation techniques, breathing, and energy conservation techniques, and other exercises. The participants will be able to participate with a tai chi video class led by a tai chi master. The class will conclude with small group case study.
Participant will be aware of the impact falls have on the elderly.
Participants will be aware of screens/tests that may better assist them in identifying those who are at an increased risk for falls.
Participants will be aware of prevention techniques they can utilize to decrease falls in the elderly.
Participants will return to work equipped with knowledge to better assist them with their fall prevention program at work and how to reach the community dwelling elderly.
