A NOTE FROM ANNE MELVIN, PT
We are officially in the fall season and really enjoying being busy, travelling and meeting you guys. As we travel and present, print, fold and mail, we are constantly thinking about how we can better serve you. We have decided to add a few more locations and so we invite and encourage you to monitor our website for changes and additions in our schedule. I know we have added a seminar in Hot Springs, AR  in Dec. and we have added a location in Mt. Pleasant, TX, and there will be more to come.
We are starting to think, seriously, about 2015. If you all have any preferences, I hope you will let me know. Hopefully we will see you, again, before the end of ther year.  --E. Anne Melvin, PT

"A Growing Troubling Triad: Diabetes, Aging and Falls" by Ryan T. Crews, Sai V.Yalla, Adam E. Fleischer, & Stephanie C. Wu
Currently the elderly population in the United States is 13% of the population. As the baby boomers age and become elderly, it is estimated that by the year 2050 the elderly population will reach 20% of the population of the United States.
Falls has and will remain a significant problem of the elderly.  39% of those elderly who fall have diabetes.
This article discusses why diabetics are more prone to falls including discussions on decreasing sensorimotor, musculoskeletal/neuromuscular complications, foot and body pain, pharmacology complications and off loading footwear.
The article goes on to look at ways to combat these fall risks including balance exercises, strengthening exercises, gait training, etc.
